3 AM Demons

Nick usually didn't have any trouble falling asleep.  He went to bed every night at eleven, even on the weekends, and was usually fast asleep within minutes.  The trouble started when he woke up in middle of the night and tried to get back to sleep.  After a quick trip to the bathroom he would lie down on his bed and the demons would visit.  He had several demons and they took turns tormenting him.

His ex-wife showed up most nights.  In her demonic form Sheila had small leathery wings.  Her blue eyes were now a glowing red.  She was always naked and often rubbed her body against his as she taunted him.

See what you can’t have anymore, Nick?  My new man can afford to buy me the things I like.  And he can give me a lot more loving than you ever could, if you know what I mean.

Others in the demonic pantheon included his boss, co-workers, teachers, and his parents.  In their demonic forms they all expressed their disappointment in him and berated him over his life choices.

You have no ambition, son.

If you had worked harder Sheila wouldn't have left you.  Hell, I don’t even know how you landed her in the first place.

Nick tried different methods to avoid his demons.  He drank nothing, not even water, after seven in the evening so he would not need to pee in the middle of the night.  But he still woke up every night between one and three and the torment would begin.  He tried sleeping pills but he still woke up in the middle of the night for his tormenting sessions.  The pills just made him sluggish the next morning.

He could function on an average of four hours of sleep a night for a while but it started to take its toll.  He was starting to make mistakes at work and had to constantly recheck his calculations.  He reached the point where he was not quite nodding off at work but was never really fully awake either.

That was when the plan came to him.

Nick called Sheila and asked to meet her after work.  He stopped at a hardware store on the way to pick up some large trash bags and a small chainsaw.  A few hours later he tossed the last trash bag, the one with Sheila’s head, into a dumpster.

That night he had his first full night’s sleep in a long time.  Nick had two more peaceful nights before the demons returned.  However, the demonic form of his ex-wife did not.

Nick decided it was time to visit his parents.
